Two full days to develop humane handling judgement, repeat practical skills and review an individual plan with close supervision.

What you will practise
Plan safe equipment, positioning, movement and secure transitions.
Notice stress, arousal and recovery, then stop or adapt before pressure increases.
Practise voluntary participation and review a plan using observable evidence.
Adapt handling to the dog, weather and setting and recognise when specialist support is needed.
Who is it for?
Carers with foundation knowledge and some experience around dogs.
01
Prepare online
Complete the advanced online course and pass its knowledge assessment. Demonstrate foundation understanding before practical participation. This is not a behaviour consultation or treatment session for aggression. Both agreed training days must be completed.
Attend both agreed training days with a supervisor. Demonstrations, guided practice and repeated scenarios give you time to ask questions, receive feedback and improve.
03
Reflect and develop
Receive individual feedback and a development plan. A practical completion certificate becomes available after the instructor confirms attendance and completion of the full agreed programme. Online progress and knowledge results remain separate from practical feedback.
YOUR TRAINING DAYS
A full programme with time to practise
12 hours of supervised teaching across 2 full days, plus 2 hours of breaks. The typical day runs from 09:00 to 16:00, including two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break. Final timings are confirmed before booking.
Both dates are agreed before booking. They may be consecutive or held on separate agreed dates. The package price covers both days.
Each learner receives supervised practice and feedback. Activities are adjusted to the learner and dog; models, video and fictional scenarios are used whenever live practice is unsuitable.
DAY 1 OF 2
Day 1 · Build safe handling decisions
6 teaching hours · 1 hour of breaks
09:00–10:00Readiness, scope and baseline60 minutes
Review prior experience, online learning and safe participation. Use fictional cases to distinguish observation from interpretation, possible pain from a training assumption, and routine handling from specialist work.
Your practice and feedback: Set a baseline and identify activities within your supervised learning scope.
10:00–10:15Morning break · 15 minutes
10:15–11:45Equipment and secure transfers90 minutes
Check lead, harness, barrier and gate suitability using demonstrations. Rehearse hand position, escape prevention, routes and a planned handover with models before any suitable live-dog practice. Repeat with supervisor feedback.
Your practice and feedback: Demonstrate equipment checks and a controlled transfer with clear stop points.
11:45–12:15Lunch break · 30 minutes
12:15–13:45Distance, arousal and recovery90 minutes
Use video and floor plans to practise identifying early changes, choosing distance and arranging protected recovery. Observe suitable dogs only without provoking a response. Compare hot, humid, cold and wet case variants.
Your practice and feedback: Explain a proportionate adjustment and how you will check recovery.
13:45–14:00Afternoon break · 15 minutes
14:00–15:30Choice and cooperative handling90 minutes
Practise invitations, voluntary participation, short sessions and calm pauses. Demonstrations may include grooming preparation or equipment introduction where appropriate. Never force restraint or use a teaching dog to rehearse distress.
Your practice and feedback: Demonstrate a low-pressure sequence and respect withdrawal from the activity.
15:30–16:00Day 1 review and preparation30 minutes
Review observed practice and agree two priorities for the second day. Write a short handling plan from a fictional case and identify missing information.
Your practice and feedback: Receive individual feedback and a plan to revisit during Day 2.
DAY 2 OF 2
Day 2 · Apply, adapt and review
6 teaching hours · 1 hour of breaks
09:00–10:00Recall, reflection and revised plan60 minutes
Review the first day’s feedback and the written plan. Recheck equipment, dog suitability, environment and learner readiness before practice.
Your practice and feedback: Explain how feedback changed the plan and what still needs checking.
10:00–10:15Morning break · 15 minutes
10:15–11:45Repeated transitions and practical stations90 minutes
Rotate through gate, route, greeting and handover stations using models first and suitable dogs only where welfare permits. Repeat the agreed skills under direct supervision, with individual corrections.
Your practice and feedback: Show consistent handling steps across more than one suitable scenario.
11:45–12:15Lunch break · 30 minutes
12:15–13:45Individual needs and difficult situations90 minutes
Work through resource pressure, mounting, fence activity, uncertainty and possible discomfort using cases and recordings. Choose prevention, space, separation or referral. Include puppy, senior, frail and flat-faced examples.
Your practice and feedback: Describe a safe response without labelling the dog or deliberately testing a trigger.
13:45–14:00Afternoon break · 15 minutes
14:00–15:30Integrated handling plan and observed practice90 minutes
Prepare and demonstrate an agreed plan from first check to secure handover. Include environmental change, weather, rest, recording and escalation. Review the dog’s response and adapt; scenarios replace live activity when needed.
Your practice and feedback: Produce an evidence-based plan and demonstrate the parts authorised by the supervisor.
15:30–16:00Individual review and development plan30 minutes
Review both days’ observed activities. Record strengths, limits and skills needing further supervision. Agree suitable next steps rather than assuming attendance permits independent handling.
Your practice and feedback: Receive an individual completion review and a development plan.
BEFORE YOU CHOOSE
Your course questions
Where does the in-person training take place?
Sessions are planned in the Yeovil area of Somerset. The exact venue, dates, instructor, group size and equipment are confirmed before you book.
How much supervised training is included?
The package includes 2 full days with 12 supervised teaching hours and 14 hours on site including breaks. The matching online course is included for 12 months.
Can I bring my own dog?
Do not bring your dog unless this has been agreed in advance. Suitable dogs, models, video and fictional scenarios are used according to welfare needs and the learning activity.
How do I book a practical course?
Send an enquiry using the button on this page. Enquiries are open, but bookings and payments are not open yet. Your written offer will confirm availability, venue, both dates where applicable and the full booking terms.
Are practical course bookings refundable?
Course bookings are subject to a non-refundable policy, with statutory cancellation rights and other legal remedies preserved. Any cancellation charge must be fair and reflect our reasonable net loss. Your written booking terms will confirm the cancellation period and refunds if we cancel or cannot supply a session, before you pay.
Is the practical completion certificate accredited?
No. A practical completion certificate recognises instructor-confirmed attendance and completion of the agreed programme. It is not an accredited qualification or authorisation for unsupervised work.
Plan your visit
Sessions are planned in the Yeovil area, with dates, exact venue, instructor, group size and equipment confirmed before booking. Tell us about access requirements so we can discuss suitable arrangements. Do not bring your own dog unless explicitly agreed in advance. We will confirm clothing, footwear, lunch arrangements and any preparation with you.
Learning that puts welfare first
Live-dog observation or handling takes place only with suitable dogs, appropriate consent and direct supervision. A dog’s comfort takes priority; models, video or scenarios may replace an activity. Learners never take sole responsibility for dogs. No fear, aggression or distress is deliberately created for teaching.
What this package means
These are independent training experiences, not accredited qualifications, veterinary training or professional certification. Attendance and feedback do not establish competence for unsupervised work. First aid never replaces veterinary care.
Before you pay
Bookings and payments are not open yet. Your written offer will confirm the included online course and access start date, all practical dates, teaching hours, total price, session arrangements, cancellation and rescheduling terms, and what happens if we cannot deliver a session. The online-only purchase terms do not form the full terms for these packages.
