2 full days12 supervised teaching hoursIndividual feedback

What you will practise

  • Plan individual care for puppies, adults, seniors, frail dogs and dogs with additional needs.
  • Rehearse check-in, supervised play, enrichment, rest, monitoring and secure checkout.
  • Follow exact feeding instructions, safe refrigerated storage and hygiene controls.
  • Recognise changing weather or health needs and communicate an honest, individual care report.

Who is it for?

Aspiring dog-care workers, volunteers and owners seeking structured practical experience.

01

Prepare online

Complete the daily care online modules and pass the knowledge assessment. Practical experience is supervised learning, not independent responsibility for dogs or a guarantee of employment. Both agreed training days must be completed.

02

Practise together

Attend both agreed training days with a supervisor. Demonstrations, guided practice and repeated scenarios give you time to ask questions, receive feedback and improve.

03

Reflect and develop

Receive individual feedback and a development plan. A practical completion certificate becomes available after the instructor confirms attendance and completion of the full agreed programme. Online progress and knowledge results remain separate from practical feedback.

YOUR TRAINING DAYS

A full programme with time to practise

12 hours of supervised teaching across 2 full days, plus 2 hours of breaks. The typical day runs from 09:00 to 16:00, including two 15-minute breaks and a 30-minute lunch break. Final timings are confirmed before booking.

Both dates are agreed before booking. They may be consecutive or held on separate agreed dates. The package price covers both days.

Each learner receives supervised practice and feedback. Activities are adjusted to the learner and dog; models, video and fictional scenarios are used whenever live practice is unsuitable.

DAY 1 OF 2

Day 1 · Prepare and deliver individual care

6 teaching hours · 1 hour of breaks

  1. 09:00–10:00Arrival, records and individual planning60 minutes

Use fictional booking records to rehearse identity, owner instructions, authorised contacts, health changes and suitability checks. Plan consent, restrictions and who takes responsibility before accepting a dog.

Your practice and feedback: Complete a check-in record and identify instructions that need clarification.

  2. 10:00–10:15Morning break · 15 minutes
  3. 10:15–11:45Supervised play, separation and rest90 minutes

Observe suitable activities and rehearse allocation, interruptions, rotations and protected rest. Compare individual recovery and explain when a dog needs a quieter plan. Use scenarios for dogs in season and uncertain group suitability.

Your practice and feedback: Plan continuous observation, safe separation and rest without blaming a dog or a group.

  4. 11:45–12:15Lunch break · 30 minutes
  5. 12:15–13:45Exact feeding, medication directions and storage90 minutes

Use demonstration food labels, portions and dummy medication to check exact products, times, allergies and veterinary directions. Practise refrigerator checks, labelling and food separation. Rehearse a fridge alarm and unclear-dose escalation; no unauthorised administration.

Your practice and feedback: Produce an accurate feeding record and explain when supplies or instructions cannot be used.

  6. 13:45–14:00Afternoon break · 15 minutes
  7. 14:00–15:30Enrichment, grooming and clean accommodation90 minutes

Prepare appropriate enrichment, check equipment and practise consent-led grooming preparation where suitable. Rehearse label-led cleaning, contact time, drying, safe re-entry and avoiding cross-contamination.

Your practice and feedback: Prepare a safe activity and explain hygiene and comfort checks before the next dog uses the area.

  8. 15:30–16:00Day 1 handover and feedback30 minutes

Review care delivered, observations, deviations and unfinished actions. Practise a clear internal handover and agree priorities for the next day.

Your practice and feedback: Receive individual feedback and write a concise handover using fictional details.

DAY 2 OF 2

Day 2 · Monitor, adapt and complete the care cycle

6 teaching hours · 1 hour of breaks

  1. 09:00–10:00Review the dog and the conditions60 minutes

Recheck the plan against overnight information, actual weather, occupied-area temperature, water, footing and rest. Practise distinguishing a forecast from conditions affecting the individual dog.

Your practice and feedback: Revise a care plan with named checks and realistic review points.

  2. 10:00–10:15Morning break · 15 minutes
  3. 10:15–11:45Individual needs and early escalation90 minutes

Rotate through puppy, senior, frail, flat-faced, in-season and unwell-dog scenarios. Practise recognising changes, pausing activity and contacting the lead or vet appropriately. Observe only suitable dogs; teaching never exposes learners to an unwell dog.

Your practice and feedback: Choose an individual response and explain urgent versus routine escalation.

  4. 11:45–12:15Lunch break · 30 minutes
  5. 12:15–13:45Repeat supervised care routines90 minutes

Rehearse the arrival-to-rest sequence, feeding checks and environmental changes with feedback. Follow role limits and keep learners directly supervised. Dogs’ comfort determines whether models or scenarios replace an activity.

Your practice and feedback: Demonstrate reliable checks across several care tasks and record any unfinished practice.

  6. 13:45–14:00Afternoon break · 15 minutes
  7. 14:00–15:30Checkout, client updates and incident records90 minutes

Rehearse physical dog and belongings checks, authorised collection and secure handover. Draft a fresh factual client update and a separate internal record from a fictional tricky day. Keep material injury, illness, medication errors and significant incidents honest and promptly escalated.

Your practice and feedback: Complete an individual report and handover without copied text, unsupported diagnosis or blame.

  8. 15:30–16:00Final observed review and next steps30 minutes

Review both days’ practical evidence, reporting and responses to changing conditions. Discuss questions, record limitations and identify further supervised experience needed.

Your practice and feedback: Receive an individual completion review and development plan.

BEFORE YOU CHOOSE

Your course questions

Where does the in-person training take place?

Sessions are planned in the Yeovil area of Somerset. The exact venue, dates, instructor, group size and equipment are confirmed before you book.

How much supervised training is included?

The package includes 2 full days with 12 supervised teaching hours and 14 hours on site including breaks. The matching online course is included for 12 months.

Can I bring my own dog?

Do not bring your dog unless this has been agreed in advance. Suitable dogs, models, video and fictional scenarios are used according to welfare needs and the learning activity.

How do I book a practical course?

Send an enquiry using the button on this page. Enquiries are open, but bookings and payments are not open yet. Your written offer will confirm availability, venue, both dates where applicable and the full booking terms.

Are practical course bookings refundable?

Course bookings are subject to a non-refundable policy, with statutory cancellation rights and other legal remedies preserved. Any cancellation charge must be fair and reflect our reasonable net loss. Your written booking terms will confirm the cancellation period and refunds if we cancel or cannot supply a session, before you pay.

Is the practical completion certificate accredited?

No. A practical completion certificate recognises instructor-confirmed attendance and completion of the agreed programme. It is not an accredited qualification or authorisation for unsupervised work.

Plan your visit

Sessions are planned in the Yeovil area, with dates, exact venue, instructor, group size and equipment confirmed before booking. Tell us about access requirements so we can discuss suitable arrangements. Do not bring your own dog unless explicitly agreed in advance. We will confirm clothing, footwear, lunch arrangements and any preparation with you.

Learning that puts welfare first

Live-dog observation or handling takes place only with suitable dogs, appropriate consent and direct supervision. A dog’s comfort takes priority; models, video or scenarios may replace an activity. Learners never take sole responsibility for dogs. No fear, aggression or distress is deliberately created for teaching.

What this package means

These are independent training experiences, not accredited qualifications, veterinary training or professional certification. Attendance and feedback do not establish competence for unsupervised work. First aid never replaces veterinary care.

Before you pay

Bookings and payments are not open yet. Your written offer will confirm the included online course and access start date, all practical dates, teaching hours, total price, session arrangements, cancellation and rescheduling terms, and what happens if we cannot deliver a session. The online-only purchase terms do not form the full terms for these packages.
